Suffering with Calorie Confusion?

Have you noticed the Ziploc bags that feature 100 calorie snack ideas? They actually give us some decent options for foods you can put in snack-sized bags to snack on while on-the-go.  Alternatively, consider other pre-packaged ideas that are on the grocery shelves today sold in 100-calorie packaging such as:

  • Chips Ahoy

  • Doritos

  • Oreos

  • Fudge Stripes

These options are far from healthy, but they meet the 100-calorie criteria that has been engrained into our calorie counting brains and popularized since the 70s.

But, here’s the rub:  If you're only focused on counting calories you can easily slip into making nutritionally deplete decisions that wreak havoc on your metabolism, weight, energy, sleep and overall health goals.

In simple terms, a calorie is a unit of energy.  Your body uses calories for every bodily function from thinking to running.  You simply cannot survive or thrive without food and the calories it provides. However, there is a distinct difference between the type of calories your body recognizes and can utilize metabolically and the those that it can’t. And, the problem remains that a large portion of society is still confused about the role of calories so they continue to consume empty calories in the form of processed, dead foods full of preservatives, chemicals and added sugars that deplete the body of vitality instead of increasing it.

Many people are under the impression that if they keep their calorie intake at a certain level, no matter where the calories come from, that they will be thin and healthy.  Believe me, I bought into the hype for decades and what I eventually found for myself and my clients is that calorie counting is not sustainable, it’s rarely accurate and it’s ultimately the wrong thing to focus on.

However, there is a solution to the confusion: focus on nutrient dense foods for energy rather than calories. When you shift your mindset to eat real, fresh and non-processed foods, amazing things start to happen in your body. You feel more energetic because you’re sleeping better, stubborn weight starts to disappear and you have a greater sense of overall well-being.
