What is a Certified Holistic Health Coach and where did you obtain your training?

A Certified Holistic Health Coach is someone who considers the whole picture, addressing each clients' bio-individualistic needs to help them actively and safely engage in healthy lifestyle behavior change. Not only do I address nutrition and exercise with my clients but I also examine other factors that affect overall wellness such as sleep hygiene, stress management and hydration among other things.

I am certified through the American Association of Drugless practitioners and received my Health Coach training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's cutting-edge Health Coach Program. During my training, I studied over 100 dietary theories, practical lifestyle management techniques and innovative coaching methods with some of the world's top health and wellness experts. My teachers included Dr. Andrew Weil, Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine; Dr. Deepak Chopra, leader in the field of mind-body medicine; Dr. David Katz, Director of Yale University’s Prevention Research Center; Dr. Walter Willett, Chair of Nutrition at Harvard University; Geneen Roth, bestselling author and expert on emotional eating; and many other leading researchers and nutrition authorities.

My education has equipped me with extensive knowledge in holistic nutrition, health coaching and preventative health.

Why should I hire a
health coach?

If you think about coaching from a sports perspective, the overarching belief of any athlete who wants to improve his/her game is: “You are never done.  Everybody needs a coach. Everyone. The greatest in the world needs a coach.”

As your coach, I firmly believe that you are the expert in your own life but as Les Brown so eloquently puts it, “It’s hard to see the picture when you’re in the frame.”  Hiring a Health Coach is essentially allowing someone else to look at the picture and be a guide to help you recognize the things that may be standing in your way of being the best version of you.

What are your thoughts
on using essential oils?

I love essential oils for so many reasons.  They have been used for thousands of years in many different cultures for health and medicinal purposes.  I use them daily in various ways from diffusing in the house to cooking for anti-aging skin care and for making my own cleaning products.  Not only do they smell wonderful but they’re known for their antibacterial, anti-fungal, immune boosting, hormone balancing and overall health boosting properties.

There are many brands on the market but it’s important to ensure that your essential oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG) meaning it has gone through 3rd party testing to ensure its purity and quality.  The company I love and trust is doTERRA.

For years I would make my own juice with my hydraulic press juicer but it became very cumbersome, time consuming and expensive to do every day.  I started looking for a greens powder that is certified organic, non GMO and gluten-free that was actually palatable. That turned out to be a long journey with a lot of wasted money on yucky tasting, gritty powders that I had to force myself to drink.

I finally found Organifi in 2015 and have used it religiously since then. It’s a great addition to an already healthy lifestyle or for someone who is just getting started in their pursuit of healthy. For those not used to eating 7-9 servings of greens and veggies each day, this is a great way to kickstart the initiative because it provides 11 superfoods in one delicious scoop helping to balance hormones, increase metabolism, increase energy, reduce inflammation and much more.

What green juice powder to you use and recommend?

What I’ve found to be the most difficult challenge for my clients is for them to plan their meals and to eat healthy, fresh, non-inflammatory foods on a consistent basis.  With the busyness of daily life, it’s easy to fall into the fast food trap which often leads to weight gain and other health problems due to the high sodium content, low quality ingredients, additives, and preservatives they contain.  There are numerous meal planning services but some of them still have low quality ingredients, although in many cases are a step above a fast food restaurant.

However I found a meal service that sources high-quality, local ingredients prepared by local chefs and delivered free to your door (in some areas) or to a refrigerator pick up spot. Territory Foods has nutrition filters to customize your preferences such as Whole30, Paleo or Low Carb. Additionally all of the food is gluten, GMO, sugar and dairy free plus they source antibiotic and hormone free meats without the use of dangerous nitrates.

What is your favorite meal
delivery service?

When I first started my healthy eating journey 18 years ago, the only place I knew to shop for high quality, organic, well-sourced and vetted meats and other foods was Whole Foods.  However, with the awareness that has been raised about the link between our food and our health, many stores now carry high quality, organic produce, meats and other foods giving us multiple options for affordable food that’s actually good for you.

Additionally, there are online services like Thrive Market, US Wellness Meats, Vital Choice Seafood and Butcher Box that I trust and order from to save time and money all the while knowing I’m getting the highest quality foods.

What is the Clean-Crafted Wine Movement and where do I buy it?

Many clients have complained of not being able to enjoy wine anymore because of headaches, poor sleep or low energy after drinking it so they just give it up altogether. What they didn’t know is that it’s not the wine but all of the added sugar, sulfites, chemicals and dyes that are added to enhance the flavor, preserve the wine and give it a more robust appearance. Additionally, unless they’re organic or bio-dynamic, the grapes used for wines are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and fungicides which eventually end up in the wine itself and ultimately into the consumer. Unfortunately this chemically-altered, unnatural wine causes symptoms that take away from the joy of having a glass of wine.

The Clean-Crafted Wine Movement on the other hand is wine that is produced without additives, preservatives, chemicals, added sugar, sulfites or dyes and uses organic grapes. As a result, many people can now enjoy clean wine without the headaches, low energy and poor sleep they had experienced before. It’s hard to know whether your wine is ‘clean’ unless you have a trusted source to buy from and that’s where Scout and Cellar come in. To find out more about the Clean Crafted Wine Movement and where to purchase it, click here; it’s the only wine I buy and serve now!
